Guide
Most site fuel is burned when almost nothing is running.
A generator at 10 to 20 percent load burns fuel for very little output. Overnight and at weekends, that is most of its hours. Moving those hours to a battery removes that fuel entirely. See construction site power.
Before changing anything, log what each generator actually does for a week: running hours, fuel delivered and, if possible, the load it carries. Most site managers are surprised by how many hours generators run below a fifth of their rating, especially overnight and at weekends.
Those low-load hours are the target. They burn fuel for almost no output, and they are the hours a battery handles best. Security lighting, CCTV, welfare heating and office equipment overnight are ideal battery loads.
The audit also shows where generators can be consolidated. Three lightly loaded small sets are often better replaced by one battery and one properly loaded generator.
Questions answered
Right-size, stop idling, go hybrid and move light loads to a battery.
For small and medium compounds, often yes; larger sites use a hybrid.
Often generators running at low load for long hours, especially overnight for security and welfare.
