Guide
When the fuel truck is the most expensive thing on the job.
On remote pipelines, wind farms, rural infrastructure and oil field pads, fuel deliveries cost more than the fuel. Every trip is labour, mileage and risk.
Remote work is common around the Permian Basin, Kern County and across the West. See solar plus storage.
Take a remote pipeline laydown yard with a site office, a welfare unit, CCTV and area lighting. Daytime draw averages around 3 kW, overnight around 1 kW. That is roughly 24 kWh during a ten-hour working day and 14 kWh overnight.
A diesel generator sized for the daytime peak would idle through the night, burning fuel for a 1 kW load. A 30 kWh battery with a solar array covering most of the daily energy, and a small generator set to start only if the battery drops low after cloudy days, removes most fuel deliveries entirely.
Remote monitoring closes the loop: the site manager sees state of charge from the office, and a swap or generator run is scheduled before the battery runs flat.
Questions answered
Battery plus solar for light loads, and a battery-generator hybrid for heavier ones.
Yes, where daily use sits within the array's daily output.
Usually battery plus solar for light loads, with a small generator only as a recharge backup, because it removes most fuel deliveries.
