Guide
LFP is a lithium-ion chemistry. The question is which one, and why stationary storage settled on this one.
'Lithium-ion' is a family, not a product. LFP — lithium iron phosphate, LiFePO4 — is one chemistry within it. So are NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) and NCA (nickel cobalt aluminium), which are what most people mean when they say 'lithium-ion' in contrast to LFP.
The chemistries differ in what they optimise. NMC and NCA prioritise energy density: more energy per kilogram, which is decisive in a vehicle. LFP prioritises cycle life, thermal stability and safety, at some cost in density.
| LFP (LiFePO4) | NMC / NCA | |
|---|---|---|
| Cycle life | 6,000+ cycles typical | Typically 1,000–3,000 |
| Thermal stability | High; far more resistant to thermal runaway | Lower; more demanding management |
| Energy density | Lower | Higher |
| Weight for a given energy | Heavier | Lighter |
| Cobalt content | None | Yes (NMC, NCA) |
| Best suited to | Stationary and mobile storage | Vehicles, portable electronics |
Cycle life dominates the economics. A storage system cycles daily. Over ten years that is thousands of cycles, so the cost that matters is cost per delivered kWh across the asset's life — not cost per kWh of capacity on day one. A 6,000-cycle pack delivers two to six times the energy of a 1,000–3,000-cycle pack of the same size.
Weight barely matters. The density advantage of NMC is decisive in a car and irrelevant on a trailer with a 3,500 lbs GVWR chassis or in a shipping container. Trading density for life is almost free in this application.
Safety changes where it can be used. High thermal stability is why an LFP system can be operated indoors, in clinical settings, on sound stages and inside marquees — environments that are simply out of scope for a combustion generator, and that demand a well-behaved chemistry.
Depth of discharge, cycling frequency and temperature. Consistently discharging to very low state of charge, cycling several times a day, and operating at sustained high temperature all reduce life relative to the rated figure.
This is why a state-of-charge cutoff exists — PulseTrek systems reserve 20% — and why usable energy rather than nameplate capacity is the number to size against. See how to size a BESS.
Questions answered
Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), a lithium-ion chemistry known for thermal stability, long cycle life and safety. It has lower energy density than NMC or NCA, which matters in vehicles and very little in stationary or trailer-mounted storage.
PulseTrek LFP cells are rated for over 6,000 charge cycles with a 10+ year lifespan warranty. Actual life depends on depth of discharge, cycling frequency and operating temperature.
Because storage systems cycle daily, so cycle life and thermal stability matter more than energy density. LFP delivers far more energy over its life and can be used safely indoors.
LFP has higher thermal stability and much lower thermal runaway risk, which is why it is preferred where systems operate in occupied or enclosed spaces.
