BESS for data centers

Data centres already have UPS and standby generation. Storage addresses a different set of problems — starting long before the facility is live.

First, what it is not

A mobile or containerised BESS is not a UPS replacement. A UPS exists to bridge the instant between utility failure and generator start for critical IT load, and it is engineered specifically for that — sub-cycle transfer, tightly conditioned output, and a duty measured in seconds.

Confusing the two leads to bad conversations. The value of storage on a data centre programme lies elsewhere, and it is substantial.

The construction phase is the obvious one

Before the permanent supply is energised, a data centre build runs on temporary generation for months: site offices, security, lighting, tools and the fit-out trades. That is a classic low-average-load profile on a site that is frequently close to housing and subject to noise conditions.

Battery storage covers it silently, and on many campuses that alone justifies the deployment — temporary generation is usually the noise complaint on a data centre build. See construction site power.

Where storage fits across the programme

Why the asset survives the build

The argument that usually lands with facility teams is not the construction saving on its own. It is that a hired generator leaves site at practical completion, while a storage asset carries on doing useful work — shaving peaks, supporting resilience, or moving to the next phase of the campus.

On a multi-building programme that changes the economics substantially, because the same system is amortised across several phases rather than charged to one.

Sizing depends entirely on the problem

Site offices during construction need tens of kWh. Commissioning support needs more. Peak shaving on a live facility is a megawatt-hour-scale conversation, which is where containerised systems scaling to 8.3 MWh come in.

Because the three are so far apart, the first question is always which problem you are solving — not which product you want.

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Can BESS reduce data centre generator use?

Yes — most directly during construction and commissioning, where temporary generation runs for months at low average load. In operation, storage reduces generator test running and supports load rather than replacing the standby plant.

Is battery storage a replacement for UPS?

No. UPS bridges the instant of transfer for critical IT load and is engineered for that duty. Storage addresses construction power, demand charges, resilience support and generator runtime — different problems.

What size BESS does a data centre need?

It depends which problem you are solving. Construction offices need tens of kWh; peak shaving on a live facility is a megawatt-hour-scale requirement.
