Guide
A simple, honest method. Use your own numbers; ours are only illustrations.
For temporary power: generator rental, fuel, fuel delivery, refuelling labour, servicing and any noise or spill compliance cost. For permanent sites: demand charges the battery can shave, energy shifted from peak to off-peak, and the cost of outages you avoid.
Purchase or finance payments, electricity to recharge, insurance, and modest maintenance. With financing from $700/month, the comparison becomes monthly: payment against current spend.
| Item | Diesel setup | Battery setup |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment | Generator rental | Finance payment |
| Energy | Diesel fuel | Grid or solar recharge |
| Logistics | Fuel deliveries | None |
| Servicing | Oil, filters, callouts | Inspection only |
Payback in months = upfront cost รท monthly saving. Run it with conservative figures. Sites with long runtimes at low load and high fuel logistics costs show the fastest payback.
Some benefits are real but hard to put in a spreadsheet: working hours no longer restricted by noise, jobs won because the tender asked for zero emissions, and no fuel theft. Keep them out of the payback figure, but mention them in the business case.
Questions answered
It varies widely with fuel cost, runtime and tariff. Calculate it from your own spend; we can help with the numbers.
Where it replaces fuel, rental or demand charges every month, usually yes. Where it only sits as backup, it is insurance.
Current monthly spend on generator rental, fuel, delivery and servicing, or 12 months of utility interval data for permanent sites.
